If only Hagar the Horrible had truly died long ago... and if only B.C., Marmaduke, Wizard of ID, Denis the Menace, and the entire Family Circus had all been passangers in the same damned car.

And that car ran over Hi and Lois as it careened out of control before slamming headlong into Cathy, then rolling over on Sally Forth and bursting into flames.

Oh what a great day for comics that would be.

it'd be even better if the bump in the road that first knocks the car out of control was Garfield.

ok, forgive my ignorance, but what's the green monster thing on the cover? i'm sure its something profoundly popular that everyone else knows but me....

Although, I must say, seeing my two fave comics of all time (Calvin and Hobbes and Far Side) laid out on the morgue tables...brings a tear to my eye.

Hey, Xerexes/ 'Monk...

How do you guys decide on the covers? Do you pick a theme and say, "Hey, Ghastly would be a good guy for our webcomic buck cake theme this month!" Or do you get approached by people looking for more exposure?

I'm curious.

It's usually more a question of finding someone who would be good for the theme. This month, for instance, I knew from reading his comic that Rob had been self-syndicating newspaper strips, and he was a relative newby to webcomics, so both his style and his experience suited the theme. It doesn't always work out that well, but there's definitely more of an effort to make it work than there was last year.

AHHH! I'm too late. Missed out on the Buck Cake Issue!

I want to thank the folks that commented on this month's cover. When Bill Duncan approached me to ask if I was interested, I couldn't turn him down. Especially considering the theme being "Death of the Funny Papers".

As I worked on this piece, I often thought back to when I was a kid reading the funny papers and how much I looked forward to Sunday morning. Full color, big pictures, and the fresh ink smell. It was cool back then. Today, there is a void of that excitment. I didn't even bother buying the Sunday paper for the comics until Opus' recent return.

Never the less, web comics have picked up where the Sunday papers left off. Cartoonists taking chances and trying new things. No boundries. An open book with unwritten rules.

With web comics still in their infancy, I often ponder where their place will be in the future. I suppose my pessimism comes out in the fact that I put the character from my own web comic on this month's cover. This uncertainty is emphasized with the fact that he's not covered by a sheet.

We'll see what the future has in store for Internet cartoonists.
