Talk About WordPress For Comics

WordPress is a great blogging tool and I've seen two efforts to adapt it to comics (technically 3 as Tyler Martin has crafted two versions of ComicPress.): ComicPress and stripShow.

ComixTalk's People Of Webcomics List For 2007

And now... the fourth annual People Of Webcomics list! I'll be the first to admit that this list gets harder and harder to compile as the lines between "webcomics" and just plain "comics" blurs harder than a greasy windshield in the middle of a West Texas downpour. Plus as publishing comics on the web and other digital formats becomes more commonplace it gets harder and harder to find those "firsts" that take comics in new directions whether artistic, technical or businesss-oriented.

Looking Back Through 2007

In years past (2004, 2005) we undertook the monumental chore of picking out the biggest headlines of the year. This year, I took another swing at it. So without further adu, here's the biggest webcomic headlines of 2007.

If I missed a story you think was key to this year, please post it in the comments to this article.

Post Thanksgiving Day Weekend Roundup

BSC WEBCOMICS IDOL 2.0

  • This week was the final round (maybe something to tweak next year to avoid having it during the week of Thanksgiving) and it all ends tonight at midnight (pretty sure about that anyhow). It's down to Templar, AZ and Lucid TV - both well done comics in every aspect and good examples of work that is thriving on the web that might not have found their audience without the web. Go vote and check out both comics if you're not already reading them.

WEBSITE WONDERLAND

  • Scott Kurtz redid his pvponline.com site -- this time working with Tyler Martin and his comicpress theme for Wordpress. If you've got a webcomic site you ought to check out Wordpress+comicpress as a solution. Wordpress is possibly the most popular piece of blogging software around (so it's not going away) and Tyler has made it work well for webcomics with the custom comicpress theme. All of it open source and free.

WIKI WATCH

  • The entry for ComixTalk is still up at Wikipedia so if you're at all wiki-inclined what would help it would be adding any citations to Comixpedia or ComixTalk from other media (preferrably in print as that's Wikipedia's bias).
  • My advice to all webcomics is still to start an entry at Comixpedia.org and let it evolve organically there for a good chunk of time (especially if you're just starting out) so that you have a very solid article with citations ready to port to Wikipedia if and when your webcomic is getting enough attention that it might be considered "notable" at Wikipedia. My opinion is that debates at wikipedia over notability and deletion in a lot of cases have much more to do with the actual state of the article on Wikipedia than the subject of the article itself.

SYNDICATION

  • Pink Raygun wants your comics.
Pink Raygun is now accepting webcomic submissions. We are looking for six female created webcomics to run on a weekly basis.

What exactly is Pink Raygun? Apparently "[...] a webzine for the modern fangirl" accoring to their faq.

EISNER AWARDS

  • As noted yesterday by DJ Coffman, the nominations for the Eisner awards is out. Besides the Best Digital Comics category's strong lineup, there are a couple of familiar names sprinkled throughout the categories. Brian Fies, whose Mom's Cancer won the very first Best Digital Comics Eisner Award is nominated this year as well in the categories "Best Reality-based Work" and "Best Graphic Album - Reprint". Gene Yang's American Born Chinese is nominated in the "Best Graphic Album - New" category and Lark Pien's coloring in "Best Coloring". Svetlana Chmakova's Dramacon and Hope Larson's Gray Horses are nominated in the "Special Recognition" category.

HEADLINES

Continuing rumbles over how to turn the CBR/CBZ file format into the mp3 of comics, this time from Modern Tales publisher and WebcomicsNation owner Joey Manley:

All I need is RSS-with-enclosure subscribability — a CBR reader that acts just like a podcast catcher, in short, only snagging .CBR or .CBZ files, instead of .MP3’s.

I can’t take credit for this idea. take a look at this thread started by the well-known comics writer Warren Ellis almost two years ago. “TIVO for comics,” he calls the idea. That pretty much sums it up.

What Comic Management System (CMS) do you use?

I'm just wondering what CMSes you use out there in Internet land to publish your comics.

Updating the Feed Lists

When we switched to Drupal one of the nice things I was able to set up was pulling in the RSS feeds of other sites to Comixpedia. That way we do less "link" blogging here but you can still get a sense of what's going on in webcomicland from the syndicated headlines.
