North Carolina WebComic Coffee Clatch Report for April 12th, 2008.
Submitted by Jamie Robertson on April 14, 2008 - 13:38
Hi all,
It was suggested at the last Clatch that we start chronicling the events of each monthly meeting. To further that end, I’m posting this little message to hit the highlights. We did have three new members at the meeting, Jesse Justice, Eric Coker and Greg Black. Maybe next time we will list everyone in attendance. Anyway, we had a lot of business to discuss so let’s go.
NCWCCC on the State of Things May 8th.
NCWCCC founder, Larry "mckenzee" Holderfield, has kindly finagled a 20 minute segment on WUNC’s The State of Things focusing on the NCWCCC. Larry, Ursula and Stephanie will be in the studio with Frank Stasio singing Zombie Love and talking about webcomics and the Clatch. The segment airs on May 8th in the second half of the show. The show will also be available the next day for downloading via podcast on TSOT’s website. Be sure to give it a listen.
Free Comic Book Day at Heroes Haven in Burlington, NC.
May 3rd, 2008 is Free Comic Book Day and Hero’s Haven is sponsoring the event by providing four tables for our use. We may sell our swag, give stuff away, or just hang out. As of this writing four members, Larry Holderfield, Ursula Vernon, Dan Johnson, Thomas Boatwright and I have agreed to participate. We can probably handle one more person, so if you want to attend or I have forgotten someone, let me know ASAP. Directions for those attending will be forthcoming.
May NCWCCC meeting in Greensboro, May 17th.
In addition to the Free Comic Book Day event we will also have our normal Clatch meeting on May 17th in Greensboro, NC. A venue has not yet been selected, but we will let you know as soon as we can. Some of the members have expressed a desire that the meetings take on a more professional tone, or at least we should maybe, ya know, talk about webcomics. Therefore it has been suggested that we meet in the Greensboro Public Library. In any event we may want to start looking at venues that have private dining or meeting areas. If you have any connections to such places, email Larry or me.
Webcomic Mini-Prints. (Otter had a great marketing idea and so not to screw it up, I will let her tell it in her own words.)
This is a concept Ursula and I fleshed out a few weekends ago and we're suggesting that webcomics creators adopt it as a community project. The idea is that a lot of people go to conventions on limited budgets but are fans of many different webcomics, and are forced to pick-and-choose between the available swag. They go home with less than they wanted; also, limited funds among fans means webcomics creators are, essentially, competing amongst themselves.
So we're encouraging webcomics creators to consider releasing mini-prints. Each webcomic creator would release a limited edition print on standard 4x6 paper. The print is the webcomic creator's own design, and is released on the creator's own terms (can be exclusive to a specific convention, is exclusive for 2008, or so on).* If every webcomic creator releases a 4x6 mini-print priced between $3 to $5, then the fans can afford to make themselves a personalized album for each convention they attend with signed collectible prints from their favorite creators. This is respectful of everyone's budget and allows fans to create a great unique souvenir of a specific convention or convention season.
Webcomic Show and Tell.
As previously mentioned, some of the members of the Clatch requested that we focus more on webcomics, particularly the craft of webcomics. To that end, Larry suggested that we each take turns describing the process of making our own webcomics. Ursula was the first victim of this experiment and did beautifully, touching on how she writes and illustrates Digger. The trio from the Da Da Detective, Matt, Dave and Stephanie, are up next month.
The NCWCCC Forum.
We do have a forum, two in fact. Some of the members had expressed interest in taking the Clatch discussions online, but off the LJ or mailing list. For further discussion you can find our original forum at Talk About Comics and a slightly newer one at The International Cartoonists Conspiracy. Both are listed under “specialty items†on the website. I’ll put a more conspicuous link on the website later today.
NCWCCC website sponsorship.
Finally, I think we all agree that the website is helpful in steering people our way, or at least it looks cool in an email sig. For the past year or so I have been paying for the hosting, which equals out to be roughly $10.00 a month. With another brilliant idea, where does he get them, Larry has suggested that we take turns sponsoring the site for a month at a time. I’ll post a banner ad at the top of the page after sending out this report. Please go to the Sponsor page to find more information on how you can help. If no one objects I’ll make it so we can use both banner (468 x 60) and letterboard (728 x 90) ads. I’ll let you know when it’s up. This will be only available to the members of the Clatch. FYI, we do have Project Wonderful ads on the site, but they are only bringing in about $1.00 a month. Please note that the NCWCCC site has very low traffic, rough 10 hits a day, but you can help with that too by posting a link to the Clatch website on your site. You may find link buttons and banners at the Link to Us page. You may also make your own ads and link back to http://ncwccc.com. You can also help support the site by bidding on Project Wonderful ads.
If I missed anything, or made any goofs, please reply to this post here in the NCWCCC Livejournal.
As a side note, we currently have 57 members in the Clatch.
And that’s it.
