PhilCon

PhilCon is a science fiction con with plenty of comics (and LEGO!) action.

Here's the "comics" track of events:

  • Sat 12:00 PM in Parlor B—Graphic Tales: Comics, Graphic Novels, and SF (106)

Since the 1930?s, with the debut of Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and a certain strange visitor from another planet, comics and SF have been intertwined. Characters like Batman, Iron Man, Green Lantern, and the X-Men all contain heavy science fiction influences. And titles like The New Gods, The Eternals, and The Legion of Super Heroes (which took place in the 30th century!) are basically serialized space operas. So why does it seem like so many fans of either genre don?t seem to see any similarity? Our panelists will look at comics from an SF perspective.

  • Glenn Hauman (mod), Joe McCabe, Phil Kahn, Greg Pak, Robert Jeschonek, Shadesong

  • Sat 4:00 PM in Seminar B—WebComics: No, it doesn't mean Spiderman! (104)

Some of the most widely read comics being published today aren?t found in stores, but can be found right on your computer! Online comics have become a booming industry, and a number of already successful comic writers and artists have begun to offer their creations online. Find out more about what makes a successful webcomic, what it takes to be a webcomic creator, and which ones already out there are worth your valuable web browsing time!

  • Rob Balder (mod), Phil Kahn, James Hartstein, Karrie Hartstein, Salley-Rouge Pax, Jon Kilgannon

  • Sun 2:00 PM in Parlor B—Won't the Real Superhero Please Stand Up? (100)

Film and Television Adaptations of Comic Books. Spiderman has stayed pretty true to his comic-book origins. So did the Justice League and Hellboy. But Batman?s had several incarnations (including that one with the rubber nipples, but let?s just try and forget about him, shall we?). And just what the heck happened to the Fantastic Four!? We?ll take a look at how our favorite heroes have changed from page to screen? and sometimes, how they shouldn?t have changed.

  • Robert Jeschonek (mod), Jay Smith, Glenn Hauman, Jennifer Williams, Greg Pak

In addition, Harknell and Onezumi will be on 4 panels: The Art of Business, Webcomics, She's in love with a Geek, and State of The Arts at Cons.

Podcast Party

Phil and I will be hosting an I'm Just Drinking suite party on Saturday night (look for signs and notices for the room number). We will be shooting not only episode 5 of the vidcast (featuring drinks from PartiallyClips and Onezumi), but also a separate video on how to throw a room party at a con (with helpful advice on things like bouncing troublemakers and what to do when the cops show up).

Come by to get drunk (if you're legal) and immortalized (even if not).

Better Turnout at WW If

We'd get a better turnout at the next WW meeting if we turned it into a I'm Just Drinking edition. I'm just saying...

Long after

It'd have to be after. PhilCon started during the Roosevelt administration.

Roads? Where we're going we don't NEED roads.

It'd have to be after. PhilCon started during the Roosevelt administration.

Clearly the only reasonable conclusion here is that Phil Khan IS A TIME TRAVELER.

TIME PARADOX

It's really simple. If I intend on time traveling in the future back to when they were naming the Con, to get them to name it after me, it'll have already happened. Using Preston & Logan's Time Theories, anyway.

But yeah, the novelty of my name and the con's name rhyming will never cease. That's practically the only reason I went last year at all.
