When Cathy Guisewite started her comics career in 1976 there weren't many women making comics. 'Cathy' was one of the first mainstream comics written by and about a woman. When she announced she would be ending the long-running comic strip October 3rd it made me think about some of the webcomics I read that happen to be made by women.

MILESTONES: Harvey Pekar passed away yesterday at age 70. I never met Pekar, but he was an important creator who wrote honest portrayals of life in his comics. Many pages of tribute and condolences around the web today.
CONVENTION: Intervention announced that artist and webcomic creator Molly Crabapple, the founder of the Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, will be there both on a panel as well as running a Dr. Sketchy’s event at the con (Currently scheduled to take place Friday Sept.10 from 7-10pm). Excellent!
COLLECTIVES
- It looks like the Blank Label Comics group has entered the phase of rock band stardom where one member of the original group plus newcomers = profit. Okay I tease a bit - if I'm reading the new website right David Willis is the only remaining original member but the newcomers are no slouches: Spike and Kel. I really haven't followed up on BLC for awhile so I guess I missed the rest of the original crew going their own ways.
- The SpiderForest Collective is accepting applications for new members until July 24th. SpiderForest was started in 2004 by Ran Jado and is home to over 30 comics. There are 3 requirements for members: update your comic, help vote in new members, and display the rotating SF banner above the fold on your site.

Another week and whadya know the Wikipedia entry for ComixTalk was deleted. Meh? What I really need to be working on is getting a cameo in Evil Inc. Gary gets all the cool webcomic cameos...
WE INTERRUPT THIS BLOG POST TO REMIND YOU THAT THERE ARE ONLY 6 DAYS TO GO IN PATRICK FARLEY's KICKSTARTER DRIVE TO BRING BACK ELECTRIC SHEEP. As of Sunday night yesterday there were 354 backers putting up $5,371 in pledges -- less than $650 to go to make the magic number.
AWARDS: The Comics Reporter reports that Aaron Colter's webcomic Wondermark won Outstanding Webcomic at the Stumptown Comics Convention awards. Only thing is I'm pretty sure Aaron Colter is the marketing coordinator for Dark Horse and Wondermark is from a fellow named David Malki!.
BUSINESS: Webcomics.com inked a discount deal with a printer for its subscribers. Is that ironic? Well either way that sounds like a good deal and a nice benefit to subscribing to webcomics.com.
CRAFT: David King, creator of Danny Dutch, has a set of lettering dos and don'ts. (h/t Robot6)
A GOOD USE OF SOME DEAD TREES: Not brand new news, but damn exciting - Hope Larson has been signed to do a graphic novel adaptation of Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. I love(d) that book -- it blew my grade school mind away.

- New Octopus Pie up... a little more bittersweet than usual and a spot-on Chuck E. Cheese homage.
- Shaenon Garrity drew chibi versions of her mad scientist characters. Mwhahahahaha!
- The Beat reports that Jon Lewis’s cult comic True Swamp is back as a webcomic.
- Haven't linked to Nathan Sorry in awhile. 9/11 is the starting date for this twisty mystery which is a good read -- just hope Rich Barrett keeps at it until it's finished.
- Sea Monster by Nathan Castle is a trip. I still kind of have to wrap my brain around it to say something intelligent about it. Definitely recommend you checking it out though.

Quick update this morning - The Escapist website is having a contest -- more like an audition -- to pick a regular webcomic for the The Escapist. I haven't read the fine print so you should before you enter, but go check it out. Btw, SLG Publishing is going to have a workshop for "aspiring comic creators" this March in San Jose, CA.
DEAD TREES: Robot6 previews a lot of comics on book publishers' schedule for this year, includes several webcomics such as Goats, Octopus Pie and Penny Arcade.
INTERVIEWS: Lots of folks linking to this interview with Bill Watterson of Calvin & Hobbes worship fame... Be sure to check out Graphic Novel Reporter's interview with Kazu Kibuishi on his print collection of Copper.
